Meet Sarah, The Happy Hairdresser

Just off Main Street, The Happy Hairdresser is a bright, cheerful, and welcoming children's salon run by Sarah O'Callaghan, who's been styling little heads for over six years.

Sarah created the salon after noticing that many children needed a calmer, more thoughtful experience when it came to haircuts. Her space offers one-to-one appointments, gentle language (think "tickling away the hairs" instead of "razor"), and an atmosphere that helps both children and parents feel at ease.

Originally drawn to Portlaoise for its friendly community and central location, Sarah quickly made it her home. "It's such a warm, welcoming town with so many brilliant local businesses," she says. "And it's really handy for families from nearby counties to visit."

Her typical day is a cheerful whirl of appointments from 9:30am to 5pm, "It's super busy, but I love every minute of it. I feel very lucky to do what I do," she beams. And when the scissors are down? You might spot her recharging with a cappuccino at Chocolate Brown, browsing the Fruit & Nut Health Store, or enjoying a bit of retail therapy at Shaws Department Stores.

With her calm, child-centred approach, Sarah is gently reshaping how little ones experience haircuts by creating a more inclusive, positive space, one snip at a time. "I'm here to help kids feel good and build trust," she says. "One snip at a time."
